Things to Do in Nackawic in February | A Local's Guide
February is the real winter month in Nackawic. December is a gamble and March is a negotiation, but February delivers: the snowpack is deep, the trails are groomed, the ice is at its most dependable, Crabbe Mountain is running every day, and the days are noticeably longer than they were at New Year's. It's cold, sometimes seriously cold, but it's the month the winter activities around here were built for. Here's how we'd spend it.
Peak Sledding Season
If you ride, February is the month to come. The trail network around Nackawic connects into the wider provincial system, and by February the base is deep and settled, the clubs are grooming regularly, and the long weekends bring riders from across the Maritimes. Check the New Brunswick Federation of Snowmobile Clubs trail reports before you load the trailer, make sure your permit is current, and dress for wind chill on the open stretches. Our snowmobiling guide covers trail access, permits and planning in detail.
Skiing at Crabbe
Crabbe Mountain, about half an hour from town, is in full stride in February: all the terrain open, lessons and rentals running, and the most reliable conditions of the season. The trade-off is cold. Pick your days by the forecast, start after the sun's been up a while, and take your breaks at the Thirsty Boot Lounge at the base. Family Day weekend is the busy one; weekdays are quiet and the snow is just as good. If you're making a trip of it, our Crabbe Mountain ski weekend guide covers where to stay, eat and explore, and the Crabbe Mountain Inn in Millville is the closest bed to the lifts.
Ice Fishing on the Headpond
February is prime ice fishing season on the Mactaquac Headpond, with the thickest, most dependable ice of the winter and a well-established community of shacks and regulars out on the bays. That said, the headpond is a reservoir with current under it, and ice is never uniform, so rely on current local reports, stay on known routes, and don't trust ice near shore, inflows or anywhere the water moves. A New Brunswick angling licence is required, and the provincial regulations cover species and limits. Our ice fishing guide has the full rundown on regulations and safety.
Family Day Weekend
New Brunswick's Family Day is the third Monday of February, and the long weekend is the busiest of the winter around here. Crabbe is packed, the sled trails are busy, and cottages and the Crabbe Mountain Inn fill up well ahead. There's often family programming at the hill and in the community. If you're coming for the long weekend, book early; if you'd rather have the place to yourself, the weekends before and after are quiet with identical snow.
The Big Axe in Deep Snow
February is when the World's Largest Axe looks most like a postcard: deep snow in the park, the headpond white to the far shore, and a low, bright sun that lights the axe from the side. It's a short, cold stop. The paths may not be cleared right after a storm, and the waterfront building and washrooms are closed for the season. Go midday for warmth and light, and bring a hat; the wind off the frozen headpond is no joke.
Snowshoes and Skinny Skis
February is the best snowshoeing month, with a deep, consistent base on the easy trails at Big Pokiok Nature Park and Millville's Friendship Trail. Both are good for a midday outing, and the Friendship Trail is flat enough for cross-country skis if there's been fresh snow. Go between late morning and mid-afternoon when it's warmest and brightest, carry a thermos, and keep it short on the bitter days.
The Loop in Full Winter
The Loop Scenic Drive, 75 minutes along both shores of the Saint John River with more than a dozen lookouts, is at its most dramatic in February: white hills, black river where it's open below the dam, and the long blue shadows of a winter afternoon. It's a good option on a day too cold for anything else, since the lookouts are a short step from a warm car. Check road conditions first, start by early afternoon, and watch for drifting on the open stretches.
Warming Up in Town
February is when the warm stops matter most. Big Axe Brewery on Otis Drive is the natural end to a day on the hill or the trail, and a pint by the window while the snow comes down is one of the better February experiences in the province. The Waterfront Pub on Route 105 is the spot for a proper meal. Robin's Donuts handles the morning coffee, and a hot chocolate there is the standard reward for kids who've been outside all day. Valentine's Day is worth checking the pub's and brewery's calendars for. Hours are on the winter schedule, so a quick call ahead helps.
What's Happening in February
Family Day weekend is the anchor, with Valentine's Day the week before and the usual run of winter fundraisers, suppers and community events through the month. Check the Destination Nackawic events page for this year's dates before you plan your weekend.
A February Day Trip
Coffee at Robin's on the way in. A morning at Crabbe once the sun's up, or a snowshoe at Big Pokiok if you'd rather stay closer to town. Lunch at the Thirsty Boot or back in Nackawic at the Waterfront Pub. Stop at the Big Axe for the postcard shot in the midday light. Drive a section of the Loop if there's daylight left. Finish at the brewery. Keep the car warm and the daylight in mind; it's dark by five-thirty.
Making a Weekend of It
February is the best winter weekend month here. A ski day and a sled day, or a ski day and an ice-fishing morning, with the Loop and the Big Axe filling the gaps. Stay at the Crabbe Mountain Inn if the hill is the point, or a cottage near the headpond if sledding or fishing is. Book well ahead for Family Day weekend. The Places to Stay page on this site will get you started.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is February a good time to visit Nackawic?
For winter activities, it's the best month. Reliable snow, groomed trails, dependable ice and a ski hill running every day. Dress for cold and plan around the short days.
How cold does it get in February?
Daytime highs are usually below freezing, often well below, and cold snaps can push overnight lows past minus twenty-five with wind chill. Check the forecast and plan the outdoor time for midday.
Is the ice safe for fishing in February?
February generally has the thickest ice of the season, but the headpond never freezes evenly. Use current local reports, stay on established routes and avoid shorelines, inflows and moving water.
Is Family Day weekend busy?
Yes, it's the busiest winter weekend. Book accommodation early and expect crowds at Crabbe and on the trails. The weekends either side are much quieter.
What should I wear in February?
Full winter kit: an insulated jacket, base layers, snow pants for anything outdoors, winter boots rated for the cold, a hat, mitts rather than gloves, and a neck warmer or balaclava for windy days and the sled trails.
Why February Is Worth the Cold
February asks you to dress properly and plan your day around the light, and in return it gives you the most reliable winter in the valley: the best sledding, the best skiing, the best ice and a Big Axe buried in snow. Come prepared and you'll see why the people who live here stop complaining about winter somewhere around the first of the month and start enjoying it.
